AI Boom Could Extend Memory Shortage Until 2030
By Andy Patrizio Verified |techstrongsemi.com
The artificial intelligence revolution is reshaping the global memory market, and not for the better, but in ways that could keep shortages and higher prices in place for years, according to a new report from consulting firm Kearney. The report, titled “The Great Memory Reallocation,” states that the industry is facing more than a traditional boom-and-bust cycle.

NVIDIA Formally Introduces Vera, a CPU Designed for AI
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
NVIDIA formally took the wraps off of Vera, its second-generation custom CPU based on the Arm microarchitecture and engineered to power AI and high performance computing (HPC). After decades of hyping GPUs and downplaying the role of the CPU, NVIDIA is firmly in the CPU business. However, its CPU business is designed in conjunction with its GPU business and the two are tightly paired. Right off the bat, it’s clear where Vera differentiates itself from Grace.

AMD Launches New CPUs With DDR4 Support
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
CPU and motherboard makers like to transition off of old technology as soon as possible, generally speaking. But thanks to the severe shortage of DDR5 memory, AMD has introduced new CPUs that rely on older DDR4 memory. Memory makers right now are in a transitionary period from DDR4 to DDR5, so shortages were inevitable anyway. Add to it the explosive growth in AI data centers — and AI is particularly memory intensive — causing a massive shortage.

Huawei Claims It Can Build Cutting Edge Chips in Five Years
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
China has been working to circumvent the highly restrictive sanctions related to chip technology that the US put in place starting in 2019, and now it may have achieved that in the form of a breakthrough with semiconductor giant Huawei. The chip giant, specifically named in the 2019 sanctions, said this week that it had achieved a fabrication breakthrough that would allow it to make cutting-edge chips on par with TSMC and Intel within five years.

TSMC Lays Out ‘Three-Layer Cake’ Vision for AI Chips
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is laying out a vision for the future of chip design that is built on a platform of three integrated technologies rather than keeping them separate. The new paradigm was introduced at the 2026 Technology Symposium in Hsinchu, Taiwan, by TSMC Senior Vice President Zhang Xiaoqiang. The three-layer cake consists of the integration of compute, 3D integration packaging, and photonics optical transmission.

Customers Offer to Buy Manufacturing Equipment for Memory Makers
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
The shortage of memory for systems is no secret, but even this is hard to swallow. Reuters reports that major customers of SK Hynix, one of the three big memory makers, are offering to bankroll the purchase of advanced memory manufacturing equipment. Normally, it’s up to Hynix and its two chief competitors, Samsung and Micron, to buy their own manufacturing equipment from ASML, the Dutch giant that makes all of the advanced equipment used for making chips.

Global Chip Sales Increase 79.2% Year-Over-Year in Q1
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
There appears to be nothing stopping semiconductor sales, not war, not economic uncertainty, and not supply shortages. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global semiconductor sales in the first quarter of 2026 were $298.5 billion, up 78% over the $167.7 billion reported in Q1 2025. Traditionally, the period from Q4 to Q1 of the following year is a slow one for semiconductors coming off the Christmas rush. But that’s when consumer products drove the market.

By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) said it plans to spend between $52 and $56 billion in capital expenditures this year, but it expects the parts shortage to remain through 2027. The comments were made by Jen-Chau Huang, senior VP & CFO, on a conference call with financial analysts to discuss TSMC’s first quarter earnings. It was a great quarter, too, with a 58% jump in net profit and 41% revenue growth. The company raised its 2026 revenue outlook to over 30% growth.

Intel Launches Low-End SoC Processor
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Techstrong IT
A few weeks back, Apple caused a stir with the announcement of the MacBook Neo, a $599 notebook that had the physical features of a MacBook but a low-end processor — the same one used in the iPhone 16 — and something not typically associated with Apple products, namely, affordability. And now Intel has its response in the Core Series 3 processor, codenamed Wildcat Lake. It fills out the line started by the Core Ultra Series 3 lineup of high-end, high-performance products with a high-end price.

Tariffs Add Cost, but Component Shortages Dictate Data Center Timelines
By Andy Patrizio Verified |Data Center Knowledge Verified
Tariffs on technology imports are in flux. In February, the US Supreme Court invalidated portions of earlier tariff measures, prompting the Trump administration to adjust its approach and triggering new litigation over recovery and future liability. With legal challenges ongoing, import costs and potential duty recoveries remain uncertain. Yet, even as duty rates wobble, the bigger challenge for data center builds is component availability.
