How BBC Radio5 Live's Rachel Burden Gave Birth at 31 Weeks
By Rachel Burden Verified
In February 2016, 31 weeks into my fourth pregnancy, I found myself lying under the bright white lights of an operating theatre, watching a little purple scrap of a baby being carefully scooped from inside me and placed in a clear plastic bag inside an incubator, surrounded by baby doctors and nurses. He weighed exactly 3lb. I remember thinking that I didn’t really feel love for this scrawny creature.
A month to remember

Well, the last month’s training has been eventful. Back on the 22nd January, I turned 40. Four days later I was in Morocco, running the Marrakech half marathon. It was a fantastic experience. One of my best friends lives over there, which is how the idea came to me to take part as a sort of 40th birthday celebration. The sky was unbroken blue, the sun was out, but it was fresh and cool in the morning. Perfect for running.
Facing daylight - Women's Running

‘I am glad I got out of bed eventually and was able to take in the day and enjoy it.’ Sometimes, getting out of bed in the morning and facing the cold winter’s air can feel harder than doing the running itself. But when you have to get out of bed twice in one day like our team captain, Rachel Burden, the challenge becomes even harder.
Having a plan! - Women's Running

I’m heading outside, there’s snow on the ground, I’ve been eating nuts and energy bars and knocking back electrolytes all morning and am getting ready to do an easy 6 mile run with a pair of tights on my head. The tights are the big hint that I’m not yet a proper ‘runner’ (cutting up an old pair of 60 denier was a last minute fix to keep the ears warm) but I almost feel like I’m verging on it. Two months ago I was someone who did a bit of running to balance out the wine and cake consumption.
East Cheshire Hospice

This year I'm supporting the East Cheshire Hospice, which is just up the road from me in Macclesfield. I was privileged to visit the hospice recently which cares for people at the end of their lives, as well as offering respite to individuals with life-limiting illnesses. It's a beautiful, calm and caring place run by incredibly dedicated and hard-working staff and volunteers. I'll be 40 this year.

5 live breakfast across the UK

Rachel Burden introduces a week of special outside broadcasts on BBC 5 live - an opportunity for the station to get closer to the stories of its listeners. "Come and see us, come here and really experience what it’s like for us living here at the moment - houses destroyed, livelihoods shattered, families under stress – but also surviving and helping each other…" That was the message we heard time and again during the recent flooding which hit Somerset and parts of the south east of England.
